Elexicon Energy President and CEO Wins a Clean50 Award

Indrani Butany Recognized for her Leadership and Sparking Change in Energy Sector

AJAX, ON — September 28, 2022 – Elexicon Energy (“Elexicon”), the electricity distribution company servings parts of Durham Region and beyond, is pleased to announce that its President and CEO, Indrani Butany, has received a Canada’s Clean50 Award. Recipients are forward-looking leaders representing the most effective and progressive organizations taking on climate change from every sector, balancing mitigation with adaptation.

Canada’s Clean50 Awards are announced annually by Delta Management Group and the Clean50 organization to recognize those 50 individuals or small teams, from 16 different categories, who have done the most to advance the cause of sustainability and clean capitalism in Canada over the past two years. Ms. Butany was recognized in the Clean50 Traditional Energy category for enhancing local grids and empowering sustainable technologies, resiliency and conservation.

“Indrani sets an example for other electric utilities, leading the energy transition, exemplified by demonstrated leadership on three separate projects,” explains Gavin Pitchford, CEO Delta Management Group. “The proposed ‘Sustainable Brooklin’ project will construct 11,000 new homes with features that enable Distributed Energy Resources including solar panels, battery storage and electric vehicle chargers, providing a solid foundation for future conservation. The proposed ‘Whitby Smart Grid’ project integrates several smart grid technologies into the distribution network to offer customers a net $700,000 annual benefit and reduce energy consumption by three percent. The ‘Altona Towns’ project is a brand-new, fully integrated microgrid community that gives new homeowners control over their electricity use and generation, and uses solar panels and battery storage to improve resiliency and reduce energy costs.”

“I am honoured to have been recognized by the Clean50 program, and I want to thank my entire team at Elexicon for their commitment to job excellence, dedication to our customers and communities, and responding to the rapidly changing energy landscape,” said Ms. Butany. “Projects such as these do not happen without the valuable contributions and support of a talented and driven workforce. They understand that we are at a pivotal moment in our industry. The electricity grid is transforming, demand is increasing, supply is under pressure, and technology for utilities and customers is evolving. The spotlight on our sector is growing brighter by the day. The future of energy rests on the current transformational changes and electrification that are taking place in our sector which will place increasing pressure on our business to deliver. Elexicon is aligning its people, processes and technologies so we are the utility our customers and communities deserve and expect us to be, while facilitating an efficient and orderly transition into the future.”

It has been a remarkable year for Ms. Butany and her team at Elexicon. In April, the organization held a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of its Seaton Municipal Transformer Station (“Seaton TS”). The Seaton TS is Elexicon’s first municipal transformer station wholly owned and operated by the organization. It will provide connection capacity for approximately 20,000 homes and businesses in the City of Pickering and Town of Ajax to support the growth in these communities and allow for the connection of renewable energy resources. A few months later, Elexicon held a similar ceremony to mark the completion of its Belleville Operations Centre. The 16,000-square-foot facility is a shining example of Elexicon’s commitment to the communities that it serves as well as to their economic development and prosperity. As Elexicon’s eastern energy hub, the organization is committed to supporting the Government of Ontario’s goals to building homes faster and ensuring reliability and resiliency for all customers – residential and commercial.
