Downed Power Lines

Power lines can be damaged during inclement weather or vehicle accidents.

Always assume the power line is live and avoid contact with it or anything it is touching. Get a safe distance away from it, at least 10 meters or 33 feet.

It’s important to note that if you are in an accident and a power line is on or near your vehicle, you should call emergency services and stay inside your car if possible. Wait for emergency personnel to help you get out safely.

If it is not safe to stay in your vehicle, you will need to get out. Do the following:

  • Tuck in or remove any loose clothing that could get caught on anything.
  • Only touch the door handle when opening the door.
  • Try to stand up inside the car and jump out with your arms and elbows close to your body. Nothing on you should touch the car and the ground at the same time.
  • Jump out as far away from the car as possible, landing with your feet together.
  • Keep your feet together and shuffle away with both feet maintaining contact with the ground. Try to get at least 10 meters or 33 feet away from the car.
