Award marks second consecutive year utility has been recognized by the EDA

AJAX, ON — March 26, 2024 – Elexicon Energy (“Elexicon”) is the inaugural recipient of the Electricity Distributor Association’s (“EDA”) Sustainability Excellence Award for its commitment to operating in an environmentally and socially responsible manner. The award was presented last night at the EDA’s annual awards gala, celebrating Ontario’s top-performing local distribution companies. The award marks the second consecutive year Elexicon has been recognized by the EDA. Last year, Elexicon won their Public Electrical Safety Excellence Award, sponsored by the Electrical Safety Authority.

“It’s a tremendous honour to be recognized for our sustainability efforts and commitment to environmental stewardship, but it’s extra special to achieve as we are about to celebrate our fifth anniversary,” says Ciranne Bate, Elexicon’s Environmental Specialist. “We serve some of the fastest growing communities in the country, and this makes the journey of decarbonization and renewable energy a challenge but one that is necessary. A big part of ensuring a better tomorrow for future generations is operating in harmony with our physical environment. Elexicon is constantly evaluating our practices and challenging ourselves to be and do better.”

In 2023, Elexicon’s sustainability efforts included the following:

  • ISO 14001 Compliance – The organization began the challenging and rewarding path to integrate environmental, economic and social factors into every level of its operations with the aim of being ISO 14001 compliant by 2025.
  • Establishing an ESG Framework – Elexicon established a comprehensive environmental, social and governance (“ESG”) framework, with specific key performance indicators, for reporting to shareholders.
  • GHG Emissions Baseline Evaluation – Elexicon undertook a Greenhouse Gas (“GHG”) baseline evaluation as part of the ESG framework. The evaluation also marks the beginning of Elexicon’s journey to achieving its commitment to Net Zero by 2050.
  • Approval of an Environmental Policy – The approval of the organization’s first environmental policy serves as the cornerstone of Elexicon’s sustainability journey, outlining its principles and objectives.
  • Waste Audit Elexicon conducted surveys to learn about the sustainability practices of its contracted waste disposal companies to confirm they are environmentally responsible.
  • Alignment with Contractors and Suppliers – Efforts were initiated to ensure Elexicon’s contractors and suppliers align with the organization’s sustainability goals.

April marks the five-year anniversary of Elexicon. A year-long celebration will commence next month to mark this milestone! Watch for more details to be announced in the coming weeks.
