Licensed Electrician, Master Electrician or Licensed Electrical Contractor? How to choose.

When you have electrical work to do on your home or business, you likely search for a qualified electrician. But did you know there is a difference between a licensed electrician, a Master Electrician, and a Licensed Electrical Contractor? So how do you choose?

Here is what you need to know about the roles of each type of electrician.

Different Types of Electricians Image

Licensed electrician

A licensed electrician is qualified to work for a Licensed Electrical Contracting company. They have been trained with in-class instruction and are required to complete an apprenticeship in the field under the supervision of a licensed electrician. They must also pass a licensing test. If you contact a Licensed Electrical Contractor for your project, they will dispatch one of their licensed electricians to perform the work.

Master Electrician

This is a licensed electrician who has passed the Master Electrician exam offered by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). Only Licensed Electrical Contractors and Master Electricians licensed by ESA are allowed to perform paid electrical work for customers in Ontario.

The Master Electrician designation is required to operate a Licensed Electrical Contracting business in the province. While this person is skilled in the electrical trade, they are more focused on the business aspects of the industry and operating a company. Some of their responsibilities include planning and supervising the electrical work and ensuring it is carried out in accordance with current laws and the Electrical Safety Code standards.

Licensed Electrical Contractor

This is a company licensed in the province of Ontario to perform electrical work for consumers, businesses, and other parties. The Licensed Electrical Contractor employs licensed electricians and Master Electricians.

When hiring a contractor, be sure to ask for their ECRA/ESA Electrical Contractor licence number. They are required to renew this licence each year, and it demonstrates they are in good standing with ESA and are upholding the guidelines and standards of conduct for the profession.

When working on a project for you, the Licensed Electrical Contractor is required to file all required documentation for the work with ESA, including the Connection Authorization and inspection of the work by ESA. Be sure to get a copy of the documents for your records and insurance purposes.
