AJAX, ON — April 28, 2023 – Today, Elexicon Energy (“Elexicon”) held a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the completion of its Seaton Municipal Transformer Station Number 1 (“Seaton TS”), located in north Pickering. Elexicon President and CEO, Indrani Butany-DeSouza, was joined by the the Honourable Peter Bethlenfalvy, MPP for Pickering-Uxbridge and Minister of Finance, and City of Pickering Mayor, Kevin Ashe, to celebrate the significant milestone.
The Seaton TS is Elexicon’s first municipal transformer station wholly owned and operated by the utility. It will provide connection capacity for approximately 20,000 homes and businesses in the City of Pickering and Town of Ajax to support the growth in these communities and allow for the connection of renewable energy resources.
Elexicon invested in modern equipment, built to current municipal transformer station standards. The equipment is housed in a climate controlled indoor environment for better reliability compared to outdoor equipment that is exposed to the elements, animal interference and other potential issues.
The groundwork for the Seaton TS began in 2010 when stakeholders were creating the vision for the new Seaton community in Pickering, near Brock and Taunton Roads. While Elexicon had infrastructure in the area, it was clear a new transformer station would be needed to serve the growing population. A comprehensive business case was developed, and it was determined that Elexicon would be best served constructing its own transformer station to power the new development and surrounding areas.
In planning for the new transformer, Elexicon took the opportunity to investigate innovations that would better serve its customers today and into the future. The main advantage is the overall lower cost of having one provider for electricity transmission and distribution. Another key customer benefit is that Elexicon will be able to perform the ongoing maintenance and repairs to the transformer, and leverage its local field staff to more quickly respond and perform power restoration work in the case of a power outage.
