TORONTO and AJAX, Ont. – Oct. 24, 2024 – Centennial College and Elexicon Energy are teaming up to develop and launch two micro-credentials for learners interested in careers in power distribution, thanks to a generous grant from the Ministry of Colleges and Universities.
Launching in January 2025, the new curriculum will focus on Electrical Utility Distribution Stations and Control Stations, providing 40 hours of module-based, part-time training over the course of 10 weeks. The move is aimed at addressing existing labour market needs and skills gaps by training up the talent needed to replace retiring workers and upgrading knowledge as the sector adopts new technology.
“We are grateful to the Ministry of Colleges and Universities for making this critical investment in educating the next generation of energy distribution sector workers,” said Diana Harrop, Program Coordinator, School of Engineering Technology and Applied Science, Centennial College. “Micro-credentials provide an opportunity for workers to upskill to meet industry demands in just a few short months, and we are looking forward to working with partners like Elexicon to deliver on this promise.”
Elexicon will work closely with Centennial to align the curriculum with current labour market demands and ensure that participants acquire the skills and knowledge to excel in the energy distribution sector.
“Ensuring the availability of flexible, part-time learning opportunities like micro-credentials can help us power our future workforce,” said Ben Pantin, Manager, System Control Centre at Elexicon Energy. “We are excited to have a seat at the table shaping the curriculum to meet the needs of the energy distribution sector.”
Prospective industry partners are encouraged to get involved by contacting Diana Harrop at Dharrop@centennialcollege.ca and/or Slava Rolinsky at Srolinsky@centennialcollege.ca.
